5 Signs It May Be Time to Upgrade Your Electrical Panel

Updated: Feb 13

1. Your Home Has a Federal Pacific or Zinsco Panel

Older panels, such as Federal Pacific/Stab-Lok or Zinsco/Sylvania, are known to have safety concerns and are no longer manufactured. These panels have documented issues with breakers failing to trip properly during overloads or short circuits, which can increase the risk of overheating and electrical hazards.

Upgrading to a modern panel can improve safety and ensure your electrical system meets current standards.

2. Frequent Circuit Breaker Tripping

If your breakers are constantly tripping, your electrical panel may be overloaded or struggling to handle your home’s power demands. Modern homes use significantly more electricity than homes built decades ago.

An upgrade can provide the capacity needed to run appliances, electronics, HVAC systems, and lighting more reliably.

3. Visible Signs of Damage or Wear

Burn marks, melted insulation, rust, corrosion, loose breakers, or unusual smells near your panel are warning signs that should never be ignored. Over time, internal components can deteriorate and affect safe operation.

Replacing a damaged or deteriorating panel helps reduce the risk of electrical hazards.

4. Your Panel Doesn’t Have Capacity or Space for Additional Circuits

Planning a kitchen remodel? Installing a new HVAC system, EV charger, portable generator, or other large appliance?

If your panel is already full, with no available breaker spaces, or nearing its load capacity, it may not safely support additional circuits.

In some cases, a subpanel may be an option. In others, a full panel upgrade is the safer and more appropriate solution. A licensed electrician can perform a load calculation and determine the best path forward.

5. Your Home is Over 25 Years Old

Many homes built 25+ years ago still operate on their original electrical panels. While not every older panel requires replacement, aging components and outdated designs may not align with today’s electrical demands.

In some older homes, electrical panels were installed in locations that would not meet today’s standards, such as inside bedroom closets or confined storage areas. While this was common at the time, relocation may be recommended during a panel replacement to improve accessibility and align with current safety guidelines.

If your home has never had a panel evaluation, it may be time to consider one.

Why Panel Age and Condition Matter

Electrical panels are designed to protect your home from overload conditions and electrical faults. As components age, breakers may not trip as intended, and available capacity may become limited.

Proactive evaluation helps ensure your system continues operating safely and reliably — especially before issues arise.

The Benefits of Upgrading Your Electrical Panel

Increased Safety: Reduce the risk of electrical hazards and overheating.

Improved Reliability: Minimize nuisance breaker trips and power interruptions.

Future Readiness: Ensure your system can support modern appliances and upcoming upgrades.

Added Home Value: Updated electrical systems are attractive to buyers and inspectors.

Schedule a Professional Panel Evaluation

If your electrical panel is 25+ years old, or if you recognize any of the signs above, a professional evaluation can determine whether your panel is still sufficient or if replacement is recommended.
